Who is Visible Body?

Visible Body is a Boston-based team of biomedical visualization experts, software developers, editors, writers, and anatomy enthusiasts who are on a mission to make teaching and learning visually engaging and interactive.

To date, millions of people around the world have used our products in multiple languages via the web and various devices.

Our inspiration for the content we make comes from the dynamic world of 3D games and the accessibility of mobile devices, like smartphones, so learning can happen anywhere. Our compelling and highly accurate visualizations launch education far beyond written text, flat images, and plastic models.

Commitment to Accuracy

Accuracy is critical in creating and sharing our content with the world. After all, meaningful learning can happen only with credible and comprehensive resources. Since science is not a fixed thing, we constantly update our content to reflect the most up-to-date and widely accepted scientific knowledge.

Our Content

Every one of our 3D models, animations, and illustrations is created by our in-house team of biomedical visualization experts, who hold advanced degrees in the art and science of communicating complex biology.

Our process for content creation and release is stringent. Once our in-house team has created new content, it is reviewed by an outside team of professors and professionals who have particular expertise that matches what is being reviewed. Our team discusses critiques and recommendations with the outside team, then refines the content as needed. Before it’s released for the public, finalized content is further reviewed by a test group of expert users. If something doesn’t pass muster, it is not released until it does!

The Visible Body Education Community

Millions of people all over the world have used Visible Body apps and software, including students, educators, medical professionals, patients, and anyone interested in learning about how their own body works and the science of our everyday world. Our customers include institutions such as universities, hospitals, high schools, and libraries.

Visible Body’s content and software is only as good as the people who use it to educate. We are incredibly proud of the community our user base has created in the education world.

Measurable Results

Educators who use Visible Body in their classes have seen a marked improvement in student performance. Grades skew higher when students use Visible Body content as part of lessons and homework and they retain more of the material than they would have using a regular textbook.

Dr. Cindy Harley of Metropolitan State University conducted a study across five institutions using Visible Body and determined that not only did students perform better, but that class withdrawal rates dropped significantly.

Our Team

Visible Body is a U.S.-based company located in greater Boston, a recognized center of medical innovation. Boston's world-renowned universities, hospitals, and technology firms provide a fertile ground for ideas, talent, and collaboration.

Our in-house team is made up of:

  • Biomedical visualization experts who hold advanced degrees in the art and science of communicating complex human biology. They have studied alongside medical students, have observed surgeries, and have extensive hands-on experience with cadaver dissection.
  • Educational publishing executives and teachers with decades of experience in instructional design.
  • Programmers and software architecture gurus who have written over a million lines of code to efficiently and seamlessly deliver our content across multiple platforms.
  • Customer service and sales professionals who reach across the globe and listen to what the healthcare community needs.

Visible Body is headed by brothers CEO Andrew Bowditch and CFO Matthew Bowditch. Building upon the success of the educational publishing business they founded 20 years ago, Visible Body was launched in 2007 and remains a privately held, independent venture.

Careers

The VB team is small, innovative, and dedicated.

Here at Visible Body, virtual anatomy and physiology is created by real human beings. We do not outsource our core work. Instead, you'll find us all working, creating, and exchanging ideas side by side in a creative, dynamic environment. Our employee base is made up of specialists in:

  • Medical visualization
  • Software development
  • Design and user experience
  • Content development
  • Project management
  • Marketing and business development
  • Customer service
  • Quality assurance

We have assembled an extraordinary collection of professionals working together to transform how the world sees, learns, and teaches anatomy and physiology. We were the first company to allow users to interact online with a detailed 3D human body model, and we were the first to offer true 3D anatomy apps on mobile devices. With 20 years in the rearview mirror and many other firsts to come, we are looking for additional smart, skilled and passionate people to join us on our journey along the cutting edge.

Where education, medicine, and technology intersect

We are located just outside of Boston on the Route 128 tech beltway.

While our apps and software are used across the globe, our team is situated just outside of Boston, a city known for its world-class universities, hospitals, and technology companies. We draw on the energy and expertise of our environment to do what we do at the highest level possible. Our offices in Newton, Massachusetts, are easy to get to for city-dwelling employees who use public transportation, as well as for those driving in from other locales.
